of the bahamas right now. it's a category 1 hurricane with its sights set squarely on the united states. sandy has the chance to make a major impact on the east coast from virginia up through new england and into next week. that storm blamed for 21 deaths, 11 of them in cuba. sandy hit with sustained winds of 110 miles per hour. she hit a trail of destruction, especially in the country's second largest city, santiago de cuba. the president, raul castro, expected to assess the damage in person today. >> storm is already whipping up big waves in south florida. winds were clocked yesterday between 30 and 40 miles per hour. by this afternoon, meteorologists expect to see wind gusts up to 60 miles per hour. right now parts of the sunshine state are under a tropical storm warning. >> utility companies all along the eastern seaboard already working to prevent power failures. workers on alert from florida to new england. in our area, dominion virginia power stocking trucks with supplies, monitoring the forecast as well. pepco contractors are on what's called a freeze mode, meaning they're not allowed

on the west coast of the united states yesterday? one of the warmest october days in southern california. 95 officially in l.a. vegas at 98. we had numerous locations near 100. it was very warm in san francisco, 91 degrees. the pink shading in here just outside of sacramento to the north there all in the 100-degree range. today a little cooler but still similar. we haven't had a big change of air mass. if anything, we have a little more of the onshore flow. areas closer to the coast will stay cool. if you're inland in california, a very hot day today, along with all your friends in arizona. this front will eventually try to sink down through the northern rockies and will bring much cooler air in the days ahead. seattle will get a little taste of that today with a temperature of 60 degrees. you notice we're warm from l.a. to vegas and even the inner mountain shortly. 97 in sacramento and red bluff near 99. today should be just like yesterday. >>> it looks to stay very warm in the west. but it won't be quite as hot as we go throughout the rest of the week. >>> thanks so much. >>> coming up, ma

, 15 flights canceled today to and from the united states. the result has been -- although we don't have exact numbers, thousands of americans thought to be stranded in various cities around the world. thousands of people also stuck on the u.s. side trying to get home or to whatever they need to do in europe and beyond. we talked to some people who were at a hotel outside of heathrow yesterday from philadelphia. they have been trying to get home. they thought that the earliest flight they would be able to get out on would be on friday or saturday. for people farther afield in hong kong, other parts of asia, they were thinking it might be a week before they could get another flight. the problem is that there are not that many flights to cities like new york especially some of the smaller eastern cities like philadelphia, charlotte, north carolina. much, much more difficult for people to get back there. they've been trying to route themselves through other cities, but because of that snowballing effect it has been very difficult for them. they've been upset that some airlines are no
